Wagga Sports and Bowling Club is currently being redeveloped and whilst this is underway there has been an application for another 284 pokie machines to be installed in the premises. This has provoked controversy, particularly with problem gambler councilor Robyn Preston.

She claims that many of the individuals she deals with would simply not be able to resist the additional pokies and the additional machines would only serve to heighten an already out of control gambling problem in the area. Ms Preston said that she recognized that the sports club would be an amazing community development, but did not want to inflict all the new machines on the local population.

She also claimed that the region actually had a higher number of gambling addicts than any of the surrounding regions and so the extra machines really could not be justified. She said that during 2008 over 600 people approached the problem gambling facility which was more than 100 more than had done in 2007.
