SkyCity Casino has recently agreed upon a deal with the New Zealand government to build Auckland’s new convention centre in return for up to 500 new poker machines. With each poker machine estimated to bring in tens of thousands of dollars every year, the company has a responsibility to promote safe gambling; however, SkyCity has resisted.

According to 3 News, SkyCity CEO Nigel Morrison stated that his company should not have to pay more money to help problem gamblers. The statement has been met with some angry responses, especially from The Greens, who believe that a bigger responsibility comes with installing hundreds of new poker machines. “They will find any excuse to get out of paying their fair share,” says Greens Co-Leader Metiria Turei.

Others were put off by his comments, as they conveyed casino arrogance and a lack of respect for local taxpayers. It seems that the only thing worse than a casino operator refusing to take responsibility for their services is one that has a bad attitude about it. Morrison is certainly digging his own grave with his arrogance, and the general public is not impressed.
