The New Zealand Problem Gambling Foundation is an organization that provides support to compulsive gamblers and runs prevention programs. Unfortunately, the group will no longer offer its services as it has lost its government funding. The loss is tragic, as the Problem Gambling Foundation will no longer be able to help thousands of people across the country overcome their gambling addictions.

Over the years, the organization has provided counselling services to over 25 000 people struggling with gambling addictions. Now, a new group will be chosen to provide problem gambling support. At the moment, it is believed that the Salvation Army’s Oasis program will take over the responsibilities and tasks of the Problem Gambling Foundation.

The group currently provides addiction counselling and other social services across New Zealand, so it is experienced in this field – but responsible gambling advocates wonder if Oasis will be able to fill the Problem Gambling Foundation’s shoes. Some opponents also believe that the Problem Gambling Foundation had its funding pulled because its members openly opposed the SkyCity convention centre deal.

The group was very vocal about the potentially harmful nature of the deal, and Labour’s Internal Affairs Department suspects that this has played a role in the organization losing its government funding. However, Health Minister Peter Dunne refutes the accusation by stating that the Salvation Army also opposed the deal.

He said: “I am aware that the Salvation Army has been critical of the Government in certain areas over the years, including the SkyCity convention centre, but I see no reason why this should prevent them from being contracted to provide the excellent services that they do”. Many political groups have spoken out against the decision to pull the Problem Gambling Foundation’s funding.

Both Labour and The Greens have asked the government to reconsider its decision – but it seems to be too late. It has already been confirmed that the Salvation Army will take over the contract starting July 1 2014.
