It has been a long road for James Packer’s new casino, and the project is finally beginning to see the light at the end of the tunnel. The Barangaroo high-roller casino has recently cleared a probity check, which is the second-to-last hurdle before construction can begin on the new gambling venue.
The probity investigation was carried out by the Independent Liquor and Gaming Authority (ILGA) to determine whether or not James Packer, Crown Casino and their associates would be suitable to hold a license for this new casino project. The goal of the investigation was to ensure that ownership, finances, management and operations of the casino are "financially viable".
The investigation was also aimed ensuring that the venue is free from criminal influence, which includes exploitation and the use of illegal financial sources. The final factor was to determine whether or not that casino cause harm to general community. As part of the probity investigation, the ILGA took its research overseas.
James Packer and Crown Casinos have a significant presence in the Asian gambling market, and it is important for the ILGA to examine all aspects of the business. So, if Crown Casinos were engaged in undesirable activities in Macau or the Philippines, it would have a negative impact on the company’s likeliness of gaining approval.
According to Rowen Craigie, Chief Executive of Crown Resorts, gaining probity clearance from the ILGA is a major milestone for the project. This approval will not only ensure that the local government is satisfied with the project’s credentials but also that the local community is well aware that Crown Resorts is capable of running a successful casino without corruption or causing harm to local residents.
