One of the dangers of operating an online casino site is security breaches can happen. While they are rare, there is always a slim chance. Usually, when this happens, the site informs players immediately so that they can take the appropriate action – but, Paddy Power has waited four years to let players know that a security breach occurred in 2010.

This week, Paddy Power confirmed that hackers had gained access to personal player information in 2010. The company has issued a statement that Paddy Power will be contacting certainly customers about the breach. The statement claims that it was an isolated incident and that customer accounts are not at risk.

The company has defended its actions and its decision to keep the breach quiet for so long by stating that it was not aware of the full extent of the breach until recently. In recent months, Paddy Power teamed up with the Ontario Provincial Police in Canada to retrieve the information that was stolen from a local resident. The following data was obtained on 650 000 players on the site:

  • Name
  • Username
  • Address
  • Email Address
  • Phone number
  • Date of birth
  • Security questions

Paddy Power states that the hackers did not gain access to financial information or passwords. As such, players accounts remain safe. Still, the company has apologised for the incident. Paddy Power is sorry for the inconvenience that the breach has caused players and continues to maintain its dedication to employing the most robust security systems to keep players safe.

“We sincerely regret that this breach occurred and we apologise to people who have been inconvenienced as a result,” said Peter O’Donovan, MD Online, Paddy Power. “We take our responsibilities regarding customer data extremely seriously and have conducted an extensive investigation into the breach and the recovered data.

That investigation shows that there is no evidence that any customer accounts have been adversely impacted by this breach”.
