Problem gambling is becoming an increasingly prevalent concern across Australia. Gambling spending is on the rise, and responsible gambling campaigners want to help slash problem gambling rates and ensure that players develop responsible gambling habits. This, a new program was launched in Moreland in order to achieve this goal.

Dare to Connect North West is a new program in Moreland that aims to prevent problem gamblers from relapsing. It is similar to the MoreConnect program, which was recently dropped after it failed to collect enough funding to operate. This program is unlike any other organisation that deals with problem gambling. Instead of focusing on the issue of compulsive gambling, it takes a look at alternatives.

Participants are shown alternative leisure activities to which they can dedicate their time. The program offers participants the opportunity to meet new people in a fun environment outside of poker machine clubs and casinos. “Some people we reach are in the (gambling) venues because they have nothing else to do,” says Gabriel Byrne, founder of the program.

According to the Herald Sun, Dare to Connect picks up where MoreConnect left off. The program lost its funding in 2013, when the state government voted against an increase in gaming taxes which would have benefitted problem gambling programs. Dare to Connect was able to secure funding from the Victorian Responsible Gambling Foundation, which provided $200 000 for the operation costs.

The program will start in September, and two groups of 30 participants will take part. One group will begin their 8-week session with a weekend away and the other will have an all-day event. For the next two months, they will meet for three sounds on Saturdays and Sundays to experience gambling alternatives and support services.

Individuals who wish to take part in the program must register by Friday, September 12. For more information, visit: http://www.chrysalisinsight.org.au/.
