Aquis Great Barrier Reef Resort promises to boost the overall economy of Cairns, creating new jobs and bringing in new tourism from around the world. However, the venue may not open as scheduled due to the results of the recent election. Tony Fung and his team of planners were backed by the Queensland Liberal National Party, which launched an expansion of the state’s gaming market.
The plan was to open up three new casino resorts in order to battle unemployment in Queensland as well as economy problems. Aquis was one of three casinos that were granted a license – but, the future of the project is now in jeopardy. This week, the LNP saw a loss of seats in Parliament, which means that the party may soon lose power.
If this is the case, there is no certainty for the Aquis Casino Resort. Fung is preparing for this possibility, and aims speak with politicians from the new government about his project. “We’ve got to meet with them and get their view on the process,” says a spokesperson for the casino development project. “Mr Fung remains committed to the project and looks forward to meeting with the new government when its formed.”
The new Aquis Great Barrier Reef resort will be a luxury venue that will appeal to all types of tourists. It will feature 9 hotels, 135 villas, shopping facilities, exhibition centres and a casino. It will be developed on 343 hectares of rural land, and the entire project will cost over $8 billion to build. The venue would be a great new addition to the state, and we hope that it will be able to go ahead.
