However, responsible gambling advocates are sceptical about poker machine licenses that are issued in perpetuity. Charles Livingstone, Gambling Researcher at Monash University says:
"If you've got something issued in perpetuity there is an assumption that can't be taken off you except in the most extreme circumstances”.
He argues that it is important and socially responsible for gaming operators to renew their pokie licenses. The renewal process requires them to demonstrate that they are adhering to gambling laws, keeping players safe and ensuring a high quality of service to customers.
During this review, the state government will not be reconsidering current responsible gambling measures. However, authorities will be taking a look at some possible harm minimisation measures that could help to reduce problem gambling among Victoria’s residents.
