Crown Resorts is set to open its new high-roller casino in Sydney in 2021, and it is expected to be a major tourist attraction. While the venue has been lauded as a way to boost tourism and benefit the local economy, some elements of the design were troublesome to the NSW Department of Planning – so, Crown Resorts has made some changes.
The Department of Planning was primarily concerned that the casino would occupy more public space than necessary. So, the casino operator has made some amendments to the design that will meet the state’s demand. Firstly, the venue’s façade will be reduced so that it takes up less space in the area. It may also be moved further back from the waterfront.
Another change will see the public space between the tower and Watermans Cove widened. Overall, the venue will take up less space on the Sydney waterfront than was originally planned. The tower will no longer be made completely from stone; instead it will be changed to a glass and stone design, which will better suit the look of the waterfront.
A Barangaroo design panel has also insisted that the tower be home to an observation deck, which would help to bring even more tourism into the city. It will be located on the 65th level of the casino, and will offer views of the Sydney Opera House and Harbour Bridge. The gaming floor has remained unchanged.
This is good news for high roller gamblers around the world, as Crown Resorts has not made any concessions that will compromise the gaming experience for visitors. There is still on change that is up for debate: whether or not Crown Resorts will be able to feature its logo atop the building.
The Design Advisory Panel has recommended that Crown leaves its logo off of the new casino – but the casino operator continues to argue that it should be allowed to do so, as Crown Resorts is spending $2 billion to build the property.
