The National Rugby league has strict rules against betting by players and other individuals in the league. To prevent match-fixing and other sports crimes, players and managers are prohibited from betting on league matches. A recent investigation has found that many players may be disobeying these rules and wagering on rugby games in the NRL. According to the report, there is ‘widespread betting’ among players in the NRL.
It suggests that there are dozens of players in the league who are wagering on matches that they should not be betting due to the NRL’s rules. However, league representatives deny these claims. Chief operating officer Jim Doyle has spoken out against these claims. He states that only 8 players have been found to wager on NRL matches.
"Let me be clear that there is no suggestion of widespread abuse of betting rules or inappropriate conduct on the field related to betting," he says. "The integrity unit is looking into whether a small number of players have breached the code of conduct by placing small bets on rugby league games against our rules”.
Should the league discover that there are players who are wagering on league matches, officials will take the appropriate action to punish them. This would mean possibly suspending players, which would aim to protect the interests of players, fans and members of the league. He also states that many of the cases of betting were quite small.
Some of the players involved in the reviewed cases had wagered $5 or less on the games. Still, wagering on games at all is in violation of NRL rules, and they could face punishment. There is certainly going to be a debate over the topic, and further investigations.
We will keep you posted on any further developments.
