The recent on-pitch altercation between Uruguay’s Luis Suarez and Italy’s Giorgio Chiellini has resulted in some severe punishment Suarez. Not only has he been suspended from both international and club matches; he also faces being dropped by a very lucrative sponsor. While football salaries provide a comfortable income for players, they also earn big bucks from sponsorships.
These can be especially lucrative when they are provided by gambling operators and sports equipment firms. Suarez faces being dropped by both, as Adidas and 888 are currently reviewing the terms of their agreements with the shamed footballer. According to Forbes, online poker and online casino players are outraged that 888 did not take immediate action after Suarez bit his opponent.
Several angry tweets were made, such as: “Suarez is sponsored by 888 poker … More like ate, ate , ate #threecoursemeal” – Matt Lowe (@mattjwlowe) Shortly after these tweets were made, 888 announced that the company will be reviewing their sponsorship with Suarez. The company wants to steer away from negative press, and it may be in their best interests to disassociate with the player.
"Following recent allegations made against Luis Suárez, we are reviewing our relationship with him,” reads a statement from 888. “We will not tolerate unsporting behavior." Unlike 888, Adidas jumped into action quickly. Shortly after the incident, Adidas issued a statement that the company takes the issue very seriously.
With its Suarez ad campaign being heavily rotated during the World Cup, Adidas could face serious backlash. Suarez’s bottom line is in danger, as he faces losing millions in endorsements. While he will be able to return to the pitch later this season, the chances of any other team paying handsomely to acquire his talents have declined significantly.
