This month, local community health initiatives want Australians to shed the title of ‘the biggest losers’. After a recent study found that Australian players lose the most money gambling, several groups banded together to launch March Away From Gambling, a month-long initiative that aims to get local residents involved in community activities and away from casinos.
The goal of March Away from Gambling is to residents taking part in activities outside of pokie clubs and other gambling venues. The organizers want participant to see how much money they can save and how much more time they are able to spend with their loved ones. The initiative also helps to support other businesses across the country and get residents interested in community events.
“I’m going to March Away from Gambling because I want to spend more time with my family,” one participant says in the initiative’s introductory video. A number of events are being hosts as part of the March Away From Gambling initiative. Any day of the week in March, you can take part in a number of free activities all day. On Mondays, Tai Chi classes, computer help courses, Bingo games and social dances are available.
On Tuesday, participants can take part in yoga, pottery classes and Zumba. Sewing classes, French conversation classes and various types of exercise classes are available throughout the week. On weekends, participants can visit the Mediterranean Fiesta and the Autumn Food & Music Festival. The events are free but participants should book in advance to secure a spot.
