Social games developer Zynga has experienced significant success in the online gaming market, but the company has recently fallen behind the times. This is likely due to Zynga’s delay in embracing mobile gaming systems. Now, Zynga will finally get involved in mobile gaming, launching its first title this week. Farmville 2: Country Escape was launched earlier this week for mobile Android and Apple devices.
It will be the first time that the Farmville series will be made available on mobile platforms, and it seems to be about time. Farmville made its debut in the gaming world in 2009, and more than 400 million users have played it. However, the game failed to hold the interest of the industry at large because it was never brought to mobile.
“We still have a huge, loyal following, and we're now bringing 'FarmVille' to mobile in a really reimagined, mobile-first way," says Jonathan Knight of Zynga. Zynga will certainly have some competition, however. Many companies have beaten Zynga to the punch in the mobile market. There are plenty of mobile poker apps to rival Zynga Poker and Scrabble-like titles to compete with Words With Friends.
There is even a very popular Farmville dupe called Hay Day, which may challenge the success of Farmville’s mobile release. In coming months, Zynga will launch more titles in the mobile gaming market. Zynga Poker and Words With Friends will soon be available for Android and Apple mobile devices.
It will take some time before Zynga is able to compete with more experienced mobile developers, but its reputation in the social gaming world may speed up the process. “Did the company miss a beat with the transition to mobile? Absolutely,” Don Mattric, Zynga CEO, realizes. “Are we fixing that? Yes, we are”. We look forward to seeing more new mobile releases and are eager how this transition will change the mobile gaming market.
