This week, Auckland Technical University is hosting the fifth International Gambling Conference. From February 19 to 21, delegates from over a dozen countries will discuss important issues in the worldwide gambling market. This year, the focus is on mobile gambling developments and regulations.
The conference aims to ensure that gambling industry professionals are well aware of new research on problem gambling as well as new treatment methods and public health initiatives. This year’s keynote speakers are Papaarangi Reid, Mark G Farrell, Samantha Thomas and Gerda Reith. Papaarangi is the head of the Department of Maori Health at the University of Auckland.
She will be discussing how this generation’s obsession with instant gratification affects the gambling market and what we can do to prevent harm. Mark G Farrell is the Senior Justice of the New York Criminal and Civil Court. He will discuss therapeutic justice, which aims to treat problem gamblers rather than jailing them.
Samantha Thomas, Associate Professor of Public Health at the University of Wollongong, will discuss the implications of new marketing techniques in the gambling market. Gerda Reith, a professor of social science at the University of Glasgow, will explore the risks of mobile gambling. The event provides health professionals and gambling industry experts to congregate in one place to discuss new technologies that are emerging.
It is important that they gain an understanding of mobile gambling in order to ensure that they can properly prevent players from becoming addicted to these games. It is a great opportunity for industry professionals to work together to prevent gambling harm.
“This conference gives us the opportunity to share knowledge and expertise from our collective experience,” says Peter Dunne, Associate Minister of Health, in his address to the conference delegates. “This is a chance for you as participants to find out about the work and research programmes underway across the world, and perhaps closer to home as well”.
The conference is already underway, but you can still attend for $250 per day. For more information, visit the conference’s website at: http://www.internationalgamblingconference.com/Register-for-Conference/0,2742,14232,00.html.
