Earlier this year, casino operator SkyCity was named as the preferred operator of a new casino development that could be built alongside Queenstown’s new convention centre. Now, after the public has spoken out against the operator’s involvement, the project developers claim that they are unsure whether or not SkyCity is interested in building a casino on the property.
The convention centre is likely to be built at Lakeview Holiday Park, and the Queenstown Lake District Council is currently in talks with Ngai Tahu Tourism about opening up spa facilities at the site. Initially, the council was also interested in relocated the SkyCity Queenstown casino to the site of the new convention centre – but a public consultation showed that the majority of residents opposed the plan.
In August, the council sought out opinions from community members. According to the findings of the public consultation, 43% of residents opposed the addition of a casino while 25% supported the plan. The remaining residents were undecided. Prior to this, SkyCity CEO Nigel Morrison stated that his company’s involvement in the project could be the basis of a bigger casino resort.
He suggested that the property would include VIP accommodation as well as a wide range of high-end restaurants and bars. Although the council has stated that SkyCity may or may not be interested in operating a casino at the convention centre, councillors recommend that the possibility is at least explored.
The Crown will be involved in the process, helping to determine the best possible course of action if the project is to include a relocated casino. At the moment, SkyCity continues to defend its reputation. The operator has been accused of disregarding the city’s rising problem gambling rates in favour of expanding the gaming floor at SkyCity Auckland. So, it seems like a good idea for that the casino operator lays low for the time being.
