Echo Entertainment is in the process of redeveloping Brisbane’s Treasury Casino. Until recently, all we knew was that the operator plans to spend billions on the renovation, and Echo Entertainment’s CEO has finally provided some insight into his plans. The new Treasury Casino will appeal to a more upscale audience, as the casino operator aims to attract more high rollers to the property.
To make this possible, Echo Entertainment will be building a 6-star hotel and a ballroom on the property. The new hotel will have a hotel of 90 boutique rooms while the ballroom will seat up to 600 patrons. The casino operator is touting the plan as the best hotel in Australia. If the plans are approved, then the new hotel will be the first step in Echo Entertainment’s plans to build an integrated resort in Brisbane.
It will be one of the first properties of its kind in Queensland, which will give Echo Entertainment a leg up on other casino operators in the state. As part of Echo Entertainment’s plans for the Treasury Casino, the name would also be changed. The casino operator wants to rebrand the venue to suit its new upmarket image. The entire project is expected to cost upwards of $2 billion.
While these plans sound enticing, Echo Entertainment will still have to compete for the casino license. There are three new casino licenses up for grabs in Queensland, and Echo Entertainment is competing with Crown Limited over the license in Brisbane. Crown’s proposal also includes an integrated casino resort, which would be similar to the operator’s property in Melbourne.
Whether the license is granted to Echo or Crown, construction will start in 2017. The project is estimated to be completed in 2020, so there is still plenty of time before Brisbane’s new high-class casino opens its doors.
