SkyCity Adelaide has recently finalized its deal with the South Australian government that will allow for an expansion of the property. As part of the renovation, the casino operator will be able to add new pokies, gaming tables and high-stakes games. The renovation will be part of the Riverbank Entertainment Precinct renewal project.
In addition to revamping SkyCity Adelaide, the project will also include an expansion of the Adelaide Convention Centre and the redevelopment of the Adelaide Oval. The goal is to make the area more attractive to tourists and to have more residents take advantage of the valuable entertainment complex.
SkyCity CEO Nigel Morrison believes that the renovation of SkyCity Adelaide will make the casino the perfect entertainment venue for the precinct. His vision is a world-class gambling property that will offer players the chance to play high-quality casino games and experience other exciting forms of entertainment.
“Our world-class complex will be an integral part of the new entertainment, sporting and arts precinct being developed on the banks of the River Torrens, complementing the redeveloped Adelaide Oval and the new and expanded Adelaide Convention Centre,” says Mr Morrison. The initial cost of the renovation is $40 million. To provide funding for the project, SkyCity has received a tax cut.
The construction should be complete by 2020. During construction, 500 new jobs will be created and, when the venue is open, 1000 permanent positions will be available. To help offset the potential increase in gambling spending, SkyCity has vowed to employ new harm minimisation technology.
This will include voluntary pre-commitment, which will allow players to choose to set betting limits in order to keep their spending under control. SkyCity will also donate upwards of $300 000 per year to problem gambling rehabilitation programs in South Australia.
