Politicians from the Bahamas are considering making the country an online gambling hub. Tourist revenue has decline recently, as fewer visitors are making trips to the island paradise, so the government is considering licensing online gambling websites in order to generate additional funds. In the offseason, the tourism market does not generate very much income for the country.
Casino and resort staff still need to be paid, but employers struggle to fund their payrolls due to the lack of visitors. During this time, the country is in need of an additional revenue source. Tourists that visit the country are normally drawn to the Bahamas’ beautiful beaches and luxurious resort, but the casinos are also a big draw for visitors.
During tourism seasons in the Bahamas, casinos are quite busy, and local politicians anticipate that venturing into online gambling could help to boost the economy. Uri Clinton is a senior legal executive for the Baha Mar Resort and Casino, and he is interested in ensuring that the Bahamas offers an ideal regulatory environment for online gambling licensees.
He believes that it is important to stay current on the types of trends that players are interested in while engaging in regulatory practices that appeal to operators. “We should write regulations that not only properly support the oversight of gaming operations from a regulatory perspective, but also allow the operator the flexibility to provide gaming products, which the market is looking for,” he says.
Mr Uri will be speaking at a conference which will discuss the possibility of opening up the country’s gambling market to online operators. The event will take place from September 18th to 20th at the Atlantis Paradise Island Resort. Many industry professionals will be in attendance, including casino operators, hotel owners and gaming ministers.
