Echo Entertainment is in the process of bidding for the right to maintain exclusivity in Sydney’s gambling market. The Star Casino operator is up against James Packer, who wants to build a high roller casino and remove Echo’s foothold on the local casino industry. Now, Echo has suggested a unique compromise, but it does not seem that anyone else is on board.
As part of its proposal to maintain exclusivity, Echo Entertainment has promised to spend $1.1 billion on redeveloping The Star Casino in Pyrmont and improving local transportation links. Crown Casino has proposed an exclusively-VIP casino. Only one proposal will be granted, and Echo Entertainment CEO thinks he has found a solution that will please everyone.
Redmond has suggested that it would give up exclusivity in Sydney’s gambling market. The only stipulation is that the rival casino would have to agree to very strict conditions in order to operate. NSW Premier Barry O’Farrell has already stated that only one proposal can go forward, so he has not addressed Redmond’s suggested. However, he did mention that the operator is attempting to ‘have its cake and eat it, too’.
“I worked out long ago when I was battling my weight that is impossible,” O’Farrell said. Crown Casino is also unlikely to agree to the plan. The casino operator is in full control of all of its other casinos in Australia and around the world. James Packer would not like being told how to run his casinos, and especially not being given strict restrictions on their operations.
The deadline for the two proposals is approaching quickly, and this compromise seems to signal that Echo Entertainment is not entirely confident with its plan. The two companies have been told to keep details of their proposals out of the public eye until a final decision is made.
