E3 is currently taking place, as gaming enthusiasts, professionals and developers descend upon Los Angeles to take part in the world’s biggest gaming expo. Over the course of the past few years, social gaming has become a bigger part of the expo, so it was thought that E3 attendees would have something to say about Zynga’s recent turmoil. According to All Things D, however, it’s actually a non-issue.
The downward spiral of former social gaming leader Zynga has not affected the gaming public. While most people believe that it was a long time coming, others simply are not concerned with the social gaming industry. As social gaming became increasingly popular over the course of the past few years, core (console and PC) players were resistant to the genre.
According to blogger Lauren Goode, they have been reluctant to accept companies like Zynga has one of their own. So, it seems that they are disconnected from the brand and simply do not care. “These people don’t care about Zynga,” says Michael Pachter of Wedbush Securities. “It’s a different animal, social gaming”. On the other hand, there are some gamers that are pleased to see that the company is suffering.
Zynga has changed the way that gamers game – and many players do not feel that it was a change for the better. Social games like Farmville and Zynga Poker rely on in-game purchases made by players in order to make their money. Many core gamers feel that this takes advantage of players rather than aiming to please them. It is trend that has become very popular in the gaming world, and E3 patrons are not pleased.
“The investment community needs to be looking at Zynga as an example of what went wrong and be more cautious,” says Nassar Batley, a professional in the digital media investment market.
