If you haven’t heard much about the Crown Casinos new plans to build a high roller casino in Bangaroo, that seems to be the point. Negotiations between the local government and James Packer’s casino company have been kept behind closed doors, leaving the general public out of an important deal that will greatly affect the community.
MP Alex Greenwich has taken a stand, however, requesting transparency from all parties involved. In addition to requesting the involvement of the Auditor General, Greenwich has also spoken out in the public eye. He is very concerned that the local government has not made any effort to include or inform the general public, and wants to bring attention to this fact.
Crown Casinos commissioned a report on the proposal, and the government has announced that its results will not be released. For Greenwich, this sets off alarms. "Whether you support a casino or not, we should all be concerned that we will not know if the people of NSW are getting a good deal in handing a casino license to James Packer without a tender process," he says.
The new high-roller casino will not only affect the local community after it is built; its construction will also impact residents. The local community still does not how their tax dollars will be used to build this new casino and how its profits will be returned to community groups and organizations. "High rollers fly in and spend their money in the one area and then leave, so how they will benefit the community is unclear."
Greenwich contacted the Auditor General earlier this week request that a report be published on the potential benefits and disadvantages of the new Bangaroo casino proposed by James Packer. Since the local government has left the public out of the process, the Auditor General’s report would give community members some insight into how the new high-roller casino will affect them.
