For the past 8 months, local fast food restaurant has been operating 18 poker machines illegally. Even though their license was suspended in December 2011, the venue’s pokies continue to accept wagers, taking in $48 000 per year. Now, the Mana Party has had enough, and is asking that the government intervene and have the poker machines shut down.
Galaxy has been allowed to continue operating its suspended poker machines until a hearing is held on the issue. While this seems fair, 8 months between the suspension and the hearing is far too long for illegal poker machines to continue operation. As such, the Mana Party has taken the situation into its own hands.
A protest will be held in honour of the cause today outside of Galaxy, as the general public is tired of the situation taking place. This is the second instance of a venue being allowed to continue operating its pokies despite having its license suspended months earlier. With poker machines generating upwards of $50 000 per year, it is important that the government intervene when pokies continue operating after a suspension.
