This week, a bill was introduced that seeks to reduce the number of pokies in certain areas across New Zealand. While poker machine operators were successful of its success, the bill has passed its first reading, receiving a great deal of support from politicians. The new bill, drafted by Maori Party MP Te Ururoa Flavell, would allow local authorities to dictate how many poker machines would be allowed in particular areas.
They would be able to draw on the opinions of the general public regarding the impact of the number of pokies before making their decisions. Over the course of 12 months, the number of pokies would then be reduced or pokies could even be eliminated altogether. One of the interesting things is that the bill will not deal with poker machines in casinos, as they are governed by a different set of laws.
As such, the new bill would not have an impact on the Sky City convention centre deal; however, it has had some impact on the debate over the issue. The first reading was passed with a vote of 83 to 7, and the bill will move on to the next stage of Parliament next month.
