Julia Gillard may have scrapped Andrew Wilkie’s pokie reform bill, but he is still very heavily involved in the legislation. Despite withdrawing his support for her government, he still holds some power and states that he will not vote for the bill in its current form. The Gillard government is in the process of putting together a pokie reform trial, but it seems as though it has been intentionally doomed to fail.

Wilkie believes that if this is the case, or if the government abandons the plans altogether, it would be damaging to Gillard’s reputation. This week, Wilkie will meet with a government advisor to outline his list of amendments. He states that the current plan is unworkable and will not contribute to a meaningful reform. Should he disapprove of the bill, it may not even go to vote – which would help the government maintain its own reputation.

The actions of the Gillard government concerned poker machine reform seem to be quite underhanded. If the government has not damaged its reputation enough already, things could take a turn for the worse if Gillard intentionally botches the bill.
