In the small hamlet of Castlemaine, residents are opposing the construction of a new pokies venue. This is an interesting twist on the pokies debate, as Clubs Australia’s movement to ban pokie reform is gaining a great deal of support across the country. However, Castlemaine residents are not pleased with the idea of adding over 60 new poker machines to the small town.
After the local council announced plans to build a new venue in the area, 600 oppositions were made, illustrating just how strongly the local community feels about adding new poker machines to the town. “There’s also a vibrant arts and cultural community, and this development flies in the face of everything we value about this town” says David Stretch of EPIC (Enough Pokies in Castlemaine).
Normally, we would expect residents of a small town to support the construction of a new gaming venue, but that simply is not the case in Castlemaine. It seems that Maryborough Highland Society, the group which has proposed the new venue, will have to look somewhere else to build a pokies club.
