A new advertising campaign launched yesterday targets MPs who are in support of pokie reform. The campaign, launched on behalf of pubs, casinos and sports clubs, uses the catchy tagline "Won't Work, Will Hurt". Tasmanian MP Andrew Wilkie is the mastermind behind pokie reform, which requires players to limit their spending before their begin play.
Recently, he has announced that he will not support Julia Gillard's government if pokie reform is not legislation, an ultimatium which many people perceive as a 'ransom'. The advertisements, which will be displayed in the form of print ads and television commercials, set out to explain exactly why pokies reform won't work.
According to the advertisements, problem gamblers will still be able to obtain licenses to gamble and they will be able to use the precommitment technology to set their gambling limits as high as they would like. Clubs are also against the wholly 'ineffective' movement, as the cost to install the new precommitment technology will cost operators millions.
They believe that the money could be better spent working directly with problem gamblers, with counselling and other addictive services to deal with the problem head on.
