Massive NRL clubs like the St George and the Brisbane Broncos claim that by the government introducing pre-commitment on pokies they would lose thousands in revenue and could even potentially go under. The estimated loss to NRL teams is expected to be over $20 million. This money would have knock on effects for junior teams and also staff that work at the clubs.
However, Jenny Macklin the minister for families claims that NRL clubs are over-reacting and that, in fact the proposed solution ould not affect them anywhere near as badly as people are claiming – she cites the example of tobacco sponsorship being banned as an event that footy clubs were able to deal with and move on from.
The view from the clubs is hardly upbeat though, ST George CEO Danny Robinson said he would have to close the club if the law went through and NRL CEO David Gallop has said that the junior game would be decimated.
