This week, SkyCity received approval for its renovation of Adelaide Casino. Costing $300 million, the renovation will turn Station Road into an entertainment district that will attract both local and international visitors. The makeover of the Adelaide Casino will include the construction of an 11-storey building with an 80-room hotel and brand new gaming areas.
The property will also host several new restaurants and bars. The Convention Centre West Building, Riverbank Footbridge and Adelaide Oval will also be upgraded as part of this project. “This development will help transform Station Road into a true entertainment precinct”, says Nigel Morrison, CEO of SkyCity.
“SkyCity’s investment will create much-needed jobs and economic growth for South Australia and complement the redevelopment Adelaide Oval and the new and expanded Adelaide Convention Centre.” Located inside Adelaide Railway Station, Adelaide Casino is a heritage site. The renovation of the casino will mean that some heritage features will be demolished.
However, SkyCity has agreed to work with a heritage architect who will conduct a photographic study of the site and ensure that the railway station is not completely changed. Mr Morrison continues: “SkyCity has worked in close collaboration with planning authorities to secure our vision for this development, ensuring we took on board concerns relayed to us about the heritage-listed railway station.”
This is an exciting new project for South Australia, which will help to boost the local economy. During construction, 500 temporary jobs will be created. Once the renovations are completely, over 1000 permanent jobs will be available to SA residents. As Australian continues to be a major destination for international gamblers, it is important for companies like SkyCity to work hard to attract patrons from around the world.
Brisbane and Sydney are already becoming their own gambling capitals, and Adelaide may become a fierce competition after the $300 million renovation of Adelaide Casino is complete.
