When a club or pub owner wants to increase the number of poker machines at their property, they are usually met with a great deal of resistance from local city councillors. Bertie Burleigh, owner of Peggy Gordons in New Zealand, has been embroiled in one such battle – and, he emerged victorious. Now, Peggy Gordons pub will be able to increase its number of poker machines from 10 to 18.
The New Plymouth District Council provided him with the permission he needed to add new games to the venue. However, it was not an easy journey. Several council officers argued against the venue getting new pokies. They were concerned that it would cause an increase of problem gambling in the area.
There were many proponents of the new pokies, though. Karen, Shea, Chief Executive of Southern Trust, stood up for Burleigh and his request. She argued that the new pokies would benefit local community groups, as their profits would provide funding for various programs. Since 2013, Peggy Gordons poker machines have raised $374 000 for local community projects.
She also noted that the council would also receive funding through the games at Peggy Gordons. Over the course of the past five years, the council has received $100 000 for the Festival of Lights and $80 000 for Womad. Since the funding was provided by poker machines, it makes a great case for adding new games to a local venue.
In addition to providing valuable funding for community projects, the new pokies will also help to fund renovations for Peggy Gordons. This will include expanding the gaming, refurbishing the accommodation above the pub and strengthening the building for earthquake protection.
