Virtual reality is the next frontier in the gaming world, and developers are working on new ways to use this technology. One of these new innovations has come right from Sydney, as The Realm System aims to change the way we exercise. The Realm System is a unique virtual reality system that has been developed by Matt Long and his teammates from Paddington, Sydney.
The system started as a fitness device that was aimed at getting sedentary individuals more active. The developers felt that the best way to get through to this market would be by pairing the system with gaming. “As much as it had these health and fitness benefits, to get it into the hands of as many people as possible, going through the gaming industry was the way to do that,” Mr Long says.
“The biggest and the brightest minds in development are in the gaming industry and it’s just a bit more exciting and sexy when it comes to technology.” The Realm System uses hand-held controllers with sensors that track hand and body movements to measure their positions and acceleration. By measuring the player’s power, the device creates a new immersive experience for players.
It can be paired with a virtual reality headset like the Oculus Rift to provide players with even more gaming opportunities. There are currently six games that can be used with The Realm System: Zombie Sushi, VR Boxing, Tennis, Squat Box, Realm Fitness and Chop Wood. All of these games are designed to get users on their feet and being active.
Developers can get involved and create their own games for the device, and gamers can get early access to The Realm System. You can learn more about it and donate to the development team on their Kickstarter page.
