New York Gangs Introduction
New York Gangs, from developers Game OS, is a fantastic addition to the world of free pokies. It is set in the times of prohibition and the great depression, when the streets were ruled by the mob. This is a five-reel game with a whopping 30 paylines.
The Big Apple
The scene is wonderfully set with a background of a view across the River Hudson towards the iconic New York skyline. Either side of the screen is filled by two suited and armed gangsters, setting the tone perfectly. The music is bubbly and reminiscent of a speakeasy, leaving the player in no doubt that they have travelled back in time.
The makers continue the 1930s theme with the reel icons, which include a pile of bullets, a machine gun, some sticks of dynamite, a wad of dollar bills, and of course, gangsters. These four menacing mobsters are turned out in a very dapper fashion and all sport a fedora. The very last symbol and the one that can lead to some big winnings are some tumbling gold bars.
Five of these across all lines, in conjunction with a side bet, triggers the progressive jackpot game. As the saying goes, you need to invest money to make money. If no side bet has been placed, then a gamer can still win $3000! The wild symbol is a safe that opens when spun, and an attaché case and a pistol are the bonus icons.
Fire away Frankie
Excitingly, there are two bonus games, which are started when three of the bonus symbols appear. The first is Odd Man Out, where the player needs to hit one of the gangsters between the targets. The second is a classic game of Russian Roulette, where the choice is to fire the trigger or simply walk away. Game play is relatively simple with bet choices being $0.50, $1.00, $2.00, $3.00 and a maximum of $4.00.
The wager is increased and decreased by the push of either the plus or minus symbol. The Bet One button gives the gamer the choice of how many lines they wish to choose. These are from one to a maximum of thirty. For simplicity and ease, there is a Bet Max button which does exactly what it says. The player also has the choice to use the Auto Spin button, which has two modes to spin five or ten times in quick succession.
New York, New York
There are two modes in which this game can be played. Fun play gives a starting pot of $5000 and allows the gamer to completely master the game, without the shock of any loses. All elements are the same as Live mode, except there is no chance to play the progressive jackpot game. It can be played in this mode for as long as required - if money runs out, it is simple to replenish - just refresh and it is filled up again.
Game OS really has managed to capture the very essence of the 1930s underworld with this game. Try it now to see if you agree.
