While basketball is not the most popular sport in Australia, it is hard to ignore the worldwide press that the Los Angeles Clippers have received this week. Team owner Donald Sterling has been banned from the National Basketball Association (NBA) over racist remarks that he made, and now his words have had repercussions for the team in the casino gambling industry.
According to reports, the Mandalay Bay Casino in Las Vegas has severed its ties with the team. Even though the NBA has banned Sterling for his remarks, it seems to be too little too late for the casino operator. As such, Mandalay Bay will no longer offer sponsorship to the LA Clippers. “Mandalay Bay finds the comments attributed to Clippers owner Donald Sterling to be shocking and appalling,” says Mandalay Bay CEO Chuck Bowling.
“We have suspended our advertising and sponsorship relationship with the Clippers’ organization as we evaluate our continued association with the team”. Casinos are also quite controversial, so it makes sense that an operator would not want to associate with a scandal-ridden sports team.
Mandalay Bay has made a wise decision to distance itself from the team for the time being, but it begs the question: how will the team compensate for the lost ad revenue? Mandalay Bay is not the only company has that cut ties with the LA Clippers. According to Review Journal, 15 other groups have decided to stay away from the team during this time of controversy.
The team will certainly suffer as a result of lost business, even though Donald Sterling has been forced to move on from the league. There is no word yet on whether or not other casino operators will follow suit.
