New Zealand’s Harm Reduction Bill is aimed at ensuring that poker machines across the country do as little harm as possible to players. It promotes responsibility and its sponsors hope that the legislation will reduce problem gambling rates across the country. This week, a consultation on the bill was held, during which individuals and organizations presented their views about Harm Reduction.
Those who appeared at the consultation were mostly in support of the bill’s provisions. Healthcare organizations, sports clubs and city councils came forward to express their position opinions about the bill. However, the one issue that seemed to be presented was that many organizations were not pleased that the bill would give city councillors the right to allocate funds.
If this provision is passed, many organizations feel that they would lose a large portion of their funding. The bill will also provide local councillors with the ability to limit the number of poker machines in a particular area. This is the provision that has earned the most support. Even though there will be fewer poker machines in the country, reducing problem gambling rates, the ones that exist will also donate more money to local community causes.
