Across Australia, politicians are working on ways to reduce rising rates of gambling addiction. Several types of gambling reform have been proposed, but clubs across the country do not believe that the reform is the answer to solving the issue. Many groups have stated that any new laws aiming to deal with problem gambling would have to deal with what’s at the heart of the problem: addiction.
Now, a new study published in the Australian Journal of Medicine suggests a solution that takes this approach. The article suggests the use of naltrexone in the treatment of gambling addictions. The drug is used mostly to curb the addictions of heroin users and alcoholics, but doctors believe that it could be effective when treating gambling problems.
Naltrexone works by stopping the overproduction of chemicals that encourage addictive behaviour. It has been proven to be effective in treating several other forms of addiction, so Australian doctors believe that could aid problem gamblers. Since Andrew Wilkie’s solution to problem gambling – and all other alternatives presented by other politicians – is being rejected, it is time to consider a different option.
Doctors believe that medical treatment could reduce the rates of problem gambling in the country, and it will be interesting to see if this method is effective.
