This week, it was announced that Echo Entertainment received the last available gambling venue license in Brisbane. This will allow the casino operator to build a new world-class casino resort in the city, and it may mean more pokies for local casino goers. The Sydney Morning Herald has reported that Echo Entertainment is considering installing an extra 1000 new poker machines in its new casino resort.
The company already operates 16000 pokies at its existing Brisbane property, the Treasury Casino. Sources say that Echo Entertainment wants to bring its total number of pokies up to about 2500 overall. Matt Bekier, Chief Executive of Echo Entertainment, has not officially confirmed that new games will be added. However, he has noted that the company is entertaining the possibility.
He says: "To create value from the government's point of view and create value from our point of view we would look at it”. While the plan aims to provide a better gaming experience for visitors and boost the local economy, it has not gone down very well with some industry professionals.
It was thought that Echo Entertainment’s casino proposal was chosen over Crown’s because it would not result in additional pokies being brought into the community. However, the casino operator is now making plans to increase poker machine numbers. Echo Entertainment’s new Queen’s Wharf development will put Brisbane on the map in the international gambling market.
It will cost $2 billion to build, and it will include world-class facilities such as hotels, a shopping mall, a cinema, a casino, a sky deck and more. Thousands of jobs will be created, providing even more economical benefits to Queensland. The state will see an influx of tourism and a reduction in unemployment rates, thanks to Echo Entertainment’s casino resort development at Queen’s Wharf.
