The ANZPT Melbourne is one of the biggest poker events in Australia. This week, the Main Event came to a close with Edison Nguyen emerging as the champion. The young poker player will be takng home a huge prize worth $217 000. Nguyen, who lives in Melbourne, cashed in on the prize after playing for 15 hours straight on the final day of the ANZPT Main event.
His heads-up face off against Corey Kempson finally ended at 4am on Tuesday. It was certainly worth the time and effort, as Nguyen has walked away over $200 000 richer in the end. Although Edison’s tournament poker career has only just begun, he is quite experienced. His first cash came in August 2013, when he laced 14th in the Sydney Champs Main Event for $9500.
Shortly thereafter, he cashed in three Asia Championship of Poker Tournaments for a total of $47 000 – earning first place in the $13,600 + 1,400 Pot Limit Omaha Championship for $37 000. He started out 2014 with a bang, coming in first in the $ 2,500 Pot Limit Omaha event at the Aussie Millions Poker Championship for a prize of $82 000. In April 2014, he cashed in two APPT tournament in Seoul, South Korea.
Then, he seems to have taken a break until the ANZPT Main Event last month. He is now the top player in the ANZPT Player of the Year Leaderboard with 141 points. He is just ahead of Salvatore Fazzino (133 points) and David Lim (130 points). The person who is crowned Player of the Year will receive sponsorship to the Asia Championship of Poker (ACOP) and entry into the Aussie Millions main event.
