In Victoria, about 30 000 residents are considered problem gamblers. To help curb problem gambling rates, the Victorian Responsible Gambling Foundation has teamed up with footballers Sam Mitchell and Scott Pendlebury for a campaign that encourages punters to gamble responsibly. The new ad campaign is called Bet Regret, and it features both players talking about their biggest regrets on the field.
Sam Mitchell, of the Hawthorn Football Club, talks about a time when he pushed himself to play despite being injured. He further exasperated the injury and was forced to sit on the bench for the next month. Scott Pendlebury, of Collingwood Football Club, spoke about taking a kick when he should have passed – which cost his team an important game.
Each video ends with an important message, stating that everyone experiences regret sometimes – but the key is to learn from it and act responsibly in the future. It relates the regrets of these sports figures to the regret experienced by punters when they find that they have spent too much money gambling. The athletes go on to offer advice on gambling.
They tell punters to try not to gamble more than once a week, and to ensure that they stick to their budgets and time limits. It offers up helpful tools and advice that encourage players to make informed decisions when gambling.
Punters can learn how to gamble responsibly and find out if their behaviour puts them at risk as problem gamblers. There are also plenty of resources available if players are in need of counselling. You can learn more about responsible gambling at: http://betregret.com.au/.
