There was more negative news in the Australian papers yesterday, this time the Haerald Sun, regarding pokie players. This time it detailed reports of gamblers who had stolen $77million (total) in three years from business, friends and family in order to fuel their habits.
The report will add influence to the governement’s plans to introduce a ‘pre-commitment’ scheme to the pokie clubs around the country. there were just under 200 arrests made for gambling related faud in the two years between 2008 and 2010. There were even 12 cases in which the ammount stolen was over $1 million.
Sadly the most common form of gambling people were willing to result to crime for was pokie machines (which accounted for around 30% of the all the crimes). The worst case detailed that a woman aged 50 years old had stolen nearly $5million in order to fuel her pokie addiction.
Unfortunately this research does once again highlight the issues taht a small minority of people can have when they become addicted to pokie machines… Here at Online Pokies 4 U we would never want to see the kind of misery that gambling addiction can bring afflicted upon anyone, so are actually in favour of properly regulated and non big brother style pre-commitment measures.
For anyone out there who has had issues with gambling we’d advise getting in touch with Gamblers Anonymous.
