Consumer and Business Service are in the process of conducting a crackdown on gaming venues in Adelaide. Venues in the Central Business District (CBD) will be watched closely to ensure that they abide by new safe gambling regulations. The news comes one month after five venues in the CBD were fined for failing to comply with the new regulations.
As part of the new rules, clubs are required to display ‘enhanced signage’, which offers up information about responsible gambling and problem gambling support services. However, several clubs have not put these signs on display yet. “Inspectors from CBS visited 34 gaming venues over two days.
Five of the venues inspected were pinged for not displaying correct signage and each venue was subsequently fined $1,200,” says Gail Gago, Minister of Business Services and Consumers. Clubs in the area are required to report any problem gamblers that are identified on the premises, but several clubs did not have this documentation on hand.
Out of the 34 venues that were inspected, 12 did not keep internal responsible gambling documents. Five more clubs were missing several months’ worth of documentation. The CBS will be following up with all of the clubs that have received warnings and have been fined. The monitoring of these venues will ensure that they comply with the new responsible gambling rules in order to protect at-risk players and problem gamblers.
“CBS has undertaken much work with gaming licensees to ensure that they understand their new andexisting requirements under the law,” Ms Gago continues. “These particular requirements serve to increase awareness of problem gambling and promote responsible gambling behaviour”.
