International Game Technology is one of the most successful online gambling operators in the market. The company operates online pokies, social casino games and real-money gambling software – and, its social gaming product has recently come under fire. A report in Courthouse News notes that IGT’s social gaming platform Double Down Casino is being sued in a class-action lawsuit.
The action was filed by a former player named Margo Phillips, and she is acting on behalf of thousands of players across the state of Illinois. She claims that IGT and Double Down ‘illegally profited’ from these players, and aims to recover some of their wagers.
During her time at Double Down casino, Margo bought and wagered $1000. She lost her investment, and believes that the gaming platform is simply a means of ‘camouflaged gambling’ which has been disguised as a harmless social game. "Double Down Casino games are nothing more than camouflaged unlawful games of chance," Phillips says.
One of the reasons that social casino games are permitted on Facebook and other types of social platforms is that they do not require players to spend money. They use play-money chips on casino games like pokies, roulette, blackjack and more. When they run out of chips, they can choose to purchase more chips or wait until the next day when they will receive more free play-chips.
Players at social casinos are not given the impression that they could ever win money on the games available on these platforms. As such, we are interested in seeing how this lawsuit pans out for Phillips and the thousands of other players who want refunds for the money they spent at Double Down’s play money casino.
