The poll shows that 70% of Australians believe that Wilkie was justified in withdrawing his support when Julia Gillard backed out on her end of the bargain when it came to implementing poker machine this year. However, Wilkie continued to press the issue, working with the government to draft a pokie reform trial legislation. The poll indicates that over 80% of respondents support $1 betting limits as a way to curb problem gambling rates.

The idea was originally thrown out by Gillard at the beginning of 2011, but residents are still on board with the idea. While the media may have had you think that most Australians were against the idea of poker machine reform, these results show that this is not the case. Many residents want to see a solid solution to problem gambling, and mandatory pre-commitment would be what they are looking for.
