A new mega casino resort will be built near the Great Barrier Reef, and the project’s developer wants to garner local support for it. The state government has already provided approval for the proposal but billionaire Tony Fung is committed to ensuring that the local community understands the benefits of the new casino resort.
“It is very important for me that I come back and get a feel myself of the community and how everyone is reacting to this news,” Fung has said. “It will not happen without the overwhelming support of the local community”. Local residents are not normally very welcoming to new casinos and other gambling venues.
The country already has a high incidence of problem gambling, and many residents believe that new casinos will only exacerbate the problem. As such, Mr Fung wants to ensure that Cairns residents are well aware that the new casino resort will benefit the community, so that members will throw their support behind it. The project is already underway, and Mr Fung has assigned his son, Justin, to oversee it.
He will house a permanent office in Cairn’s Central Business District and he will be the point of contact during the construction process. Mr Fung and his son are confident that the new casino resort will generate a great deal of tourism in Cairns. The Great Barrier Reef is already a major tourist attraction, and the inclusion of a huge resort will only generate more business.
The resort will host nine hotels, a luxury casino, a shopping centre, convention centre and several theatres. Over 10 000 local residents will be employed at the resort when it becomes fully operational and over 9000 construct jobs will be created in the meantime. There is a great deal of potential for the resort to boost the local economy, and Mr Fung hopes that community members will recognize this.
