The owner of Brady’s Railway Hotel, David Attwood, has requested a number of new pokies for his venue. While poker machines often have a bad reputation, Mr Attwood wants to put their profits to good use by donating $70 000 worth of pokie funds to local responsible gambling charities.
According to The Border Mail, Mr Attwood recently submitted an application to the Casino Liquor and Gaming Control Authority for 30 new poker machines at his hotel. Usually, the authority is quite cautious when granting new poker machine licenses, but the hotel owner assures that the game’s profits will benefit the community. One of the donations he has planned is worth $35 000, which will be awarded to St David’s Uniting Care.
Another $35 000 will go to the Albury-Wodonga Community Network for Betty’s Place. “The donations will benefit residents of the local community who are in need, including those affected by alcohol and gambling,” Mr Attwood said. Betty’s Place is an organization that provides support to more than 200 women and children in New South Wales.
Many of the individuals that receive help from the organization have been negatively affected by problem gambling. While Betty’s Place is funded by the state government, the organization’s operating costs are not entirely covered. So, the additional assistance from pokies at Brady’s Railway Hotel will be very helpful.
In Mr Attwood’s application, he states that the hotel’s current poker machines are operated responsibly, ensuring that patrons are safe from the potential harms of gambling. The application also included a list of responsible gambling measures that Brady’s Railway Hotel would implement I the new pokie licenses are granted.
It is encouraging to see a pokie venue take such a proactive stance against problem gambling, but there is no word yet on whether or not the hotel will receive licenses for the new pokies.
