The local government is working hard to ensure that problem gambling rates don’t get any higher. In addition to working on different forms of gambling reform, politicians are also trying to change the way that gaming clubs operate. A new provision will see to it that pokies players cannot order food or beverages after 6pm, and operators call the regulation a ‘joke’.

According to Steve Old, manager of the Hospitality Association is livid about the new mandatory code. He believes that there is no need for it, and that the government is wasting its time by creating unnecessary regulations. “At no stage was there any evidence to say there was a need for a mandatory code,” he says. This provision is just one of many that have recently been introduced.

Several of the other regulations deal with banking and spending limits. For example, ATM withdrawals cannot exceed more than $400 and casino vouchers cannot exceed $10. Also, venues cannot pay out more than $1000 for a single win and operators must install clocks to keep players informed about time limits.
