One of the many reasons that many problem gamblers lose control of their spending is their inability to keep track of their gambling expenses. To help rectify this issue, NSW Welfare Agency Samaritans has helped to create the new ‘Stay On Track’ app for Gambling Help. The new ‘Stack On Track’ program is a mobile app that is available for both Android and iOS devices.

It provides pokie players with a tool to help keep track of their spending so that they do not chase losses and exceed their gaming budgets. “Many social gamblers slide into problem gambling by not paying attention to how much they are losing and that includes young people here in Cessnock who are mobile phone savvy.”

The Stay on Track app assists with the setting of and sticking to a budget and it helps users understand their own betting patterns. “Many social gamblers slide into problem gambling by not paying attention to how much they are losing,” says Graeme Penney of Samaritans. “[The app] is like having a personal advisor in your pocket who can help you to reduce overspending and track your long-term financial position.”

The app’s developers recommend that players ensure that their budget does not exceed the amount of money that they are willing to lose. It would defeat the purpose of the app if users were to set excessive betting limits. The developers also suggest that players set their tracking periods to coincide with their pay dates. After you have finalized your settings, you can begin tracking your progress.

As you entering your wins and losses, you can include the date and the type of gambling in which you took part. This will help you better monitor your spending habits. The app will keep you informed of how much of your budget you have spent and how much time has elapsed. If you’re on track, then the screen will remain blue. If you’re doing well, then the screen will turn green.

If you’re in danger of exceeding your budget, the screen will turn red. To download the app, visit: http://www.gamblinghelp.nsw.gov.au./stay-on-track/
