Important shareholders at Nintendo are urging the company to get involved the mobile and social gaming market. The console manufacturer’s latest hardware release, the WiiU, is not selling as well as was forecasted, and shareholders believe that Nintendo could make a better profit by creating games for hardware designed by Apple, Samsung and Sony.
Smartphones and tablet computers like the iPhone, Xperia, and Galaxy are becoming the future of gaming. We are seeing a wider range of games being introduced on these platforms, and it may be time for Nintendo to embrace the shift. Seth Fischer, an investor in Nintendo, has written to the company to suggest that the company consider developing mobile and social games.
He hopes to encourage other investors to take up the cause to convince Nintendo to venture into unknown territory. "Nintendo needs to embrace this thematic change in consumer demand, behaviour and expectations to stay relevant," Fischer said. According to Reuters, Nintendo has been operating at a loss for the past three years, thanks to the underperformance of its consoles.
However, the company’s games are still as popular as ever. The company relies on the popularity of its games series to sell hardware. As such, it may be time for Nintendo to cut its losses and start developing games for hardware that has been designed by other manufacturers. The Sony PS4 and Microsoft XBOX One continue to dominate the console market – always competing with PC gaming.
So, Nintendo is getting squeezed out. The company needs to take drastic steps to stay relevant, and this could be the change that Nintendo needs. Nintendo has not commented on Fischer’s suggestion. So, there is no telling how the company will respond. Nintendo has been on the fence about mobile gaming for quite some time. Will this be the push the company needs to make the move?
