Wearable technology is going to be the next frontier in social networking and online entertainment. While the market is still quite small, there is big potential here; so, now is the right time for interested parties to start experimenting with strategies to take advantage of the opportunities that wearable tech has to offer. Betfair is currently using the technology as part of its racing broadcasts to keep punters updated in real time.
It is quite a unique use of Google Glass, and we can see other betting operators using it in a similar way in the future. Betfair spokesperson Barry Orr wore the headset while reporting from Leicester Racecourse. As the race was happening, he updated viewers with real-time updates and gave them a first-person view of the excitement that was happening on the course.
“Glass has only recently arrived in the UK, so using it during our TV betting slots is just the very first step,” says Alex Deacon, Director of Product Innovation at Betfair. “Even more exciting is the potential that we see in understanding the usage and growth of wearable technology when it comes to improving our customers betting experience in ways beyond simply looking at prices on their phones, tablets or computers”.
This use of Google Glass technology would certainly go over well in the Australian gambling market. Racing is hugely popular in the betting industry, and we can see local bookmakers using the device to give punters first-person real-time views while they wager. It could also work for other high-energy spectator sports, such as rugby or football.
Few other online gaming operators have put Google Glass technology to use, but it will soon have to be a staple. Wearable technology will be a huge trend, and online casino operators should start making plans to use these devices.
