This week, SkyCity has signed a deal with the New Zealand government to build Auckland’s new convention centre. In return for building the $402 million venue, SkyCity will receive hundreds of new pokies for its Auckland location – but a hidden provision could see electronic games installed at a bus stop outside of the casino.
Metiria Turei, co-leader of The Greens, has discovered the line in the agreement between SkyCity and Prime Minister John Key. She has revealed that the line allows for the installation of poker machines at the Hobson Street bus stop, which is located on SkyCity’s property.
Economic Development Minister Steven Joyce has dismissed the concern, stating that there is no chance that the casino operator would be allowed to install poker machines outside of the casino. He states that the line in the agreement only determines the boundaries of the casino, if the operator wanted to install games there in the future.
It does not permit SkyCity to install pokies outside. Despite Joyce’s claims, this will not stop The Greens from voicing their concerns. It is one of many issues that the political group has with regards to the new convention centre deal. The Greens have long been opposed to the idea of installing new pokies in return for a convention centre in the city. The group is preparing to debate the bill at its first reading this week.
The Greens also do not believe the convention centre will provide as many jobs as the government has projected. Turei states that the numbers are inaccurate, and they are simply distracting from the potential harm that may be caused by the new pokies. At worst, she claims that the numbers are entirely made up. The first reading of the bill will more certainly result in a fierce debate. We are eager to see the results.
