Hone Harawira, MP of Te Tai Tokerau, has recently called for the ban of poker machines and other electronic gaming devices from low-income areas. He believes that the machines are detrimental to the community, and hopes that the local council will consider removing pokies from areas in which residents live on or below the poverty line. Earlier this year, more than $3.5 million was spent on poker machines in the area.
Harawira believes that money could be spent in much better ways, feeding families that are going hungry and benefiting other community initiatives. The statistics are alarming, as more than $90 000 a day was spent on pokies during a 3 month period from April to June 2011.
This indicates that problem gambling may be an issue in the area, and Harawira believes that the banning of pokies will help to reduce the rate of gambling addiction. His idea has recently been applauded by New Zealand’s Problem Gambling Foundation. Last week, the foundation issued a statement that expressed its support for Hone Harawira’s initiative.
There are plenty of problem gambling organizations across the country, and if they all adopt the same stance, Harawira’s request could gain some attention and consideration from the local government.
