In New Zealand, a growing concern for problem gambling activists is the issue of unlicensed poker machines. It seems that poker machines operators who have had their licenses cancelled can continue to operator while reapplying. Many residents view this as a dangerous gaming loophole and would like to see it closed. Currently, Galaxy Takeaways has had licenses for 18 poker machines suspended recently.
The poker machines continue to operate, however, despite the fact that they are currently legal. As it stands, some politicians view this as an illegal pokies operation and they would like to see it shut down until the company receives a new gaming license. While the company appeals the cancellation of the license, the Prime Minister allows them to continue accepting wagers.
It is not only dangerous local residents, who continue to spend money on these games; it is also unfair to licensed operators. They continue to pay licensing fees to the local government while Galaxy Takeaways operators for free while waiting to renew its license. The government has yet to respond to the issue; however, local MPs hope to take the issue into their own hands.
